There seems to be a misconception that companies slow down toward the end of the year due to the holiday season. You may hear rumblings from employees that “you might as well take the month of December off.” Or, similar rumblings from job seekers spouting that “no one hires in December” when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth!
Many corporate recruiters cite that December is their busiest and most stressful month with employers looking to hire new employees that can start after New Years.
Let’s debunk some holiday job search myths:
Myth #1 – Companies aren’t hiring during the month of December.
Yes, December tends to be chaotic on every front with wrapping up company deliverables for the year, contending with the holiday madness and trying to ward off extra pounds, but there are several reasons companies hire in December: (1) Companies need to spend the remaining money in their annual budget. (2) Hiring managers often want to tie up loose ends with unfilled positions before the end of the year. (3) Employees tend to quit their jobs around the holidays as that time of year brings about a desire to be closer to family. And, employees with other offers on the table tend to hold out for the holiday bonus then give their notice. These two factors result in end-of-year job openings. (4) Headhunters are motivated to place candidates before the end of the year to collect their commission.
Myth #2 – There are no good job postings in December.
Wrong. Your odds of finding your dream job in December are as good as in any other month. If an employer has a need, it won’t matter to them if it’s December versus January. Hiring is the end result of a need; not something based on the time of year.
Myth #3 – Don’t bother with the job search after mid-December.
Most recruiters advise job candidates to be flexible in scheduling interviews and meetings around the holidays. The interviewing process can be slower during this time of year due to employees using their vacation time. You may need to visit a company three or four times to meet the key employees involved in the decision-making process. But, the interviewing process won’t stop because of the holidays.
Another reason to job search towards the end of the year - you won’t face as much competition since the majority of those seeking jobs give up the job search until January.
