Lawrence Alma-Tadema (real name Laurens Tadema) was born in 1836 in Dronrijp a small town near Leeuwarden, which in turn was not far from Harlington in Holland. His father was a village notary, with a reasonable talent in music. He was a composer and organist. His mother was his fathers half sister. Lawrence’s father passed away in 1840, and left little for his invalid wife and two children and three step-children to live on. With the help of the extended family, they managed to survive and educate the children. The three step-children all pursued careers in business.

I step off the N train at the last stop. It’s almost as if I’m on autopilot because of the number of times I’ve done this. This year, however, is different. This is my last year to bask in all the glory, mayhem and life that is Coney Island.

Don’t get me wrong, it will still be here next year. I mean, hell, it’s a town. There will always be something named Coney Island in Brooklyn. But after this year, the history is gone. It becomes a cookie-cutter, cheap-ass, Great Adventure knock-off where circus freaks who shove knives threw their tongues are replaced with literal clowns making balloon swords for upper-class brats on day trips.

All three of these are true; I couldn’t have made them up. I was an eye witness to all three and even ate some of number three. If you are a little queasy, you might want to read these accounts a bit later when your system has settled down.

Rat Story #1 ocurred recently after we had constructed our house in rural Veracruz. It was made of adobe mud walls and had cement floors. It has wooden rafters and a tin roof that heats up in the hot season. It is dry but could flood with long periods of rain or a hurricane. It is still standing and with relatives living in it now.

There have been several other reports like this as well regarding vehicles, accidents. Much more so than usual.

10 Items or Less, a film by Brad Silberling, is now available to rent or purchase. It is a comedy/drama starring Morgan Freeman and the wonderful Paz Vega (Spanglish). I really had not heard anything about this movie, but I always enjoy Freeman’s work and the story seemed interesting enough. I was in the mood for a quirky movie and this one seemed to fit the bill, so I took a chance.

What a difference a day makes - unless you’re going through life on automatic. Scientists are no help. They say we shouldn’t sleep late even if we have the chance. Supposedly not getting up at the same time every day has a negative effect on our biorhythms. Obviously, those scientists don’t have young children.

I try to get up before the alarm clock goes off. There’s no pushing the snooze button. If I snooze, I lose what I hope will be a head start on the day. For me getting up means washing my face, brushing my teeth, exercising, showering and dressing for the day. If I wasn’t running on automatic, I’d stall.
