Flat, firm abs are all the craze nowadays. Many surveys have ranked good abs as the most attractive part of the male and female body. So why does it seem so hard to get abs like that? Most people are going about it wrong and not getting the full effect from their workout. Follow these 5 tips bellow to maximize your results.
1. Focus on the exact area that is being worked while you perform abdominal exercises. It is very easy to allow other muscles to take off some of the load from your abs if you are not careful - the trick here is to isolate your ab muscles. If you are noticing that your abs are not getting fatigued after 15 or so repetitions, then you are likely using some of your other muscles to help out.
2. No amount of abdominal exercises will reveal well toned muscles if you’re padding them with an extra layer of fat. Abs are very prone to storing fat, and are, as a result, quite possibly the hardest part of your body to get toned. The key to exposing your abs is to burn the fat away from them, which you do by cardio, not ab exercises. Compliment your abdominal workouts with 30 - 45 minutes worth of cardio before hand.
3. Avoid alcohol. Modern research has linked alcoholic drinks with a rise in cortisol, a hormone which seems to increase fat storage around your stomach. So unless you like the look of a beer belly, alcohol should just be an occasional treat for you.
4. If you’ve lost your belly fat but still are not seeing defined abdominals, chances are that you have sloppy form. Doing 2 - 3 sets of 15 - 20 repetitions of a couple of different ab exercises every other day is sufficient to tone your abdominals, so if you are not seeing results you are probably falling victim to tip #1. Remember, 20 well executed crunches are more beneficial than 50 sloppy ones.
5. A final good way to train your abs is by simply keeping them contracted when performing all of your other exercises. Also, try contracting them while sitting, standing, or driving. Not only will this help tone them, it will also reduce back strain.
