Why does adopting a positive attitude toward life seem impossible? There is a dark secret that tries to hold us back from all the good we so richly deserve.
We are born with the innate ability to overcome any human hardship whether it be social, emotional, mental, physical, or financial. The key has to be discovered on our own personal journey.
Year after year books are published promising happiness, joy, prosperity, love and health. They just don’t tell us how to do it. Oh, yes, they tell us to think positive or forget about the past. They offer us chants and “powers” and even “secrets”.
Here’s the real secret…As long as your heart or mind or body remembers that negative incident from how ever long ago, your ability to change will not be at hand.
In this article I will try to show you how to stop the negative so you can truly gather the positive.
I’ve been a social worker for 37 years. Most of you think you know what a social worker does. My approach has been different.
This is what you don’t know about me as a social worker: I work with all these people known as the dregs of society, the losers. I’ve worked with them for decades. And you know what? Many of them have found a way to unlock their dark secret for recovery and healing.
You’ll hear more about that later. But for now, just begin to think there is a way beyond the pain and into a new life, no matter how far down you’ve fallen.
Listen for a moment to Jackie S, a prior client of mine, as she explains how we can challenge our dark secret:
“For 17 years I’ve tried to find an answer to life’s pain from early childhood trauma, to adolescent hormones, to young adult mistakes.”
“It starts from sorting through your emotions one by one. From guilt, anger, fear, and shame, we begin to understand the dark secret. Hanging on to painful memories is the meaning of the dark secret.”
“To apply the simplicity of the dark secret is to learn how to let go of painful issues. By letting go, I now understand the pain from my past was consuming any joy for my future.”
“I believe challenging the dark secret is the secret of life.”
To challenge your dark secret begin by verbalizing or making a list of how you feel about a stressful problem or issue. Keep addressing your feelings until you are ready to move on and let go.
The letting go process requires you to answer the following questions:
1. What are you holding on to that you know is negative about a problem, issue, or concern?
2. What positive thought can you put in the place of the negative?
3. Most importantly, how can you take better care of yourself?
This process that I am calling emotional recovery hopefully will start you on your journey to overcoming barriers and achieving your hopes, dreams, and goals.
