Everything in existence owes its existence to a life force current, or spirit, that animates its existence. The same energy that causes my heart to beat is causing your heart to beat. The same innate intelligence that is directing the movement of every atom, molecule and cell of your body, is also directing the movement of every being, planet, star and galaxy. And the same volition that is compelling me to write these words for you to read has moved you to read them.
Think out of the box for a moment with me. What if the symptoms you have: headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, or whatever else you want to add to the list, exist to serve a purpose? What if the only reason your symptoms are there are for you to learn something from? Radical?
Track with me. Think of pain in emotional terms, like the symptom you have has a specific emotional state associated with it. It means something.
Through the years I’ve seen versions of Household Rules printed on posters, mugs and the like. You may know it, here are some of the words:
· If you get it out, put it up.
· If you sleep on it, make it up.
· If you wear it, hang it up.
· If you drop it, pick it up.
· If you dirty it, wash it.
· If you open it, close it.
· If you turn it on, turn it off.
How Do You Overcome? How do you overcome 1,300 wpm (words per minute) of negative self-talk? “Maybe, my negative self-talk isn’t that bad? How would I know?” Look at your life. Have you created the life you have dreamed of? Have you become the person you would like to be? Have you found the talents within you that make you happy and lose all track of time?
If the answer to any of these is, “No”, one of the reasons is negative self-talk. How do you overcome memories and subconscious judgments you don’t even know you have made? “How do I know, I have those?”
Learning to cope with a chronic illness is an ongoing process. With most illnesses, you know it will go away in a few days or weeks. But a chronic illness like arthritis may never go away. Millions of American suffer from arthritis. People with the same symptoms and pain cope differently. Some people see themselves as fairly helpless and limited. Others see themselves in control of their disease and focus on what they can do and don’t dwell on what they can’t do. People with a positive, proactive attitude will usually experience less pain and limitations.
It has been found that the traditional indicators of heart disease such as smoking, high cholesterol and high blood pressure account for about 50% of heart attacks. In trying to account for the rest the focus has moved to psychosocial factors - personality and behavior which give rise to stress hormones. Chronic stress, Type A personality, anger, depression and social isolation not only have a direct negative effect on the cardiovascular system but they also increase the effects of other cardiac factors. This article looks at two of these factors - depression and anger.
