Barnstaple is a thriving town situated in the southwest corner of England. It is the largest town in North Devon, and contains a wide range of shops that will wet the appetite of the most demanding shopper.
In the heart of Barnstaple is the Pannier Market, the Pannier market was built in Victorian times and opened around 1856, there is still a weekly market held in the Pannier Market today. According to a national newspaper the Pannier Market is one of the top ten food markets of England, this must be a good reason for anybody visiting Barnstaple to have a look.
Along the length of the Pannier Market is Butchers Row, Butchers Row has 10 shops that sell local agricultural goods, Butchers Row opened about the same time as the Pannier Market.
Access to Barnstaple is via the A361 North Devon link road, the link road joins the M5 motorway at Tiverton about 45 miles away, you can also access Barnstaple via the medieval long bridge that crosses the river Taw.
In May 2007 is the long waited Western Bypass Bridge opened, it is hoped that the opening of this bridge will solve Barnstaples traffic congestion problems.
Barnstaple is stooped in history and is recognized as being the oldest borough in England, it’s history ranges back to before the publication of the Doomsday Book in 1065, part of this history can be seen at the annual ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Barnsaple Fair, the Fair is an annual event held every September.
