Besides its world-famous beaches with warm, inviting surf year round, Oahu rentals also are a beacon for history buffs and lovers of culture and the arts. For people who want to understand and appreciate American history, Pearl Harbor is justly famous as an important place of pilgrimage and homage. You can spend an entire day here. It’s best to go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. To get to Pearl Harbor from Wakiki Beach you take the Nimitz Highway past the airport until Highway 99, and then you continue past the naval community to the visitor’s center. On December 7, 1941 the Japanese empire attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor where the bulk of the U.S. Pacific fleet was moored, sinking nineteen ships including eight battleships. One of these, the USS Arizona, sank immediately taking her crew of 1,100 sailors to the bottom of the sea. In 1961 a white memorial monument was erected over the middle portion of the ship. Standing on this monument you can clearly see the deck of the great battleship six feet beneath the surface of the water. The solemnity of the memorial recalls the sacrifice of the gallant sailors who still lay interred in this watery tomb. The USS Arizona memorial can be visited by taking a shuttle launch from the shore. Free guided tours are available every day from 8 am to 3 pm.
Afterwards you can visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. The Battleship Missouri, where the Japanese surrendered, now provides an educational program in naval history with its displays and videos of interviews with former members of the crew. The Bowfin Submarine Museum is one of only fifteen U.S. World War II submarines which still exist. The Bowfin was a heroic sub nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger. You will be amazed by the tiny, cramped quarters where three dozen men worked and slept between torpedoes.
Cultural and artistic opportunities abound at Oahu condo rentals. For example, the Hawaii Opera Theatre is famous for its productions of grand opera featuring international conductors, singers, and directors. A not-to-be-missed attraction is the Bishop Museum, which features Hawaii’s most comprehensive collection of Hawaiian history and natural history, as well as the finest collection of Pacific rim artwork and crafts in the world. Honolulu condos put you on the doorstep of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The Academy was founded by Anna Rice Cooke who contributed over 4,500 works of art from her private collection. At the present time the Academy’s collection totals over 34,000 works. It is recognized internationally for the quality and diversity of its collection, which contains half Western and half Asian artworks. The galleries of the Contemporary Museum in Makiki Heights, Honolulu, exhibit work by foremost contemporary artists, as well as special changing exhibits. The Museum has a great gift shop, and the café is set in a beautiful 3 ½ acre garden which is well worth a visit.
