You are probably already familiar with what a Cabin Guarantee is and you don’t know it. A Cabin Guarantee on a cruise is very similar to flying “space available” in the airline industry. In return for letting the cruise line pick your cabin, you get the possibility of being “upgraded” to a higher class of cabin if one is available. The guarantee part is you are guaranteed at least a cabin in the category you purchased. In other words, they cannot give you anything worse than what you paid for.
Each cruise line has its own magic formula to decide who gets upgraded and who doesn’t. This is the same for the airline industry and the frequent flyer programs. The more loyal you are to the cruise line, the more willing they are to upgrade you. Yes, even the cruise lines have loyalty programs. The more you cruise with them, the more benefits you can receive. Also when you booked (and with what travel agent or website) your cruise is also a factor in your ability to get a nicer cabin.
Please don’t let this scare you away from taking a Cabin Guarantee. If you are flexible in your vacation plans and don’t mind a little “mystery” in your cruise a Cabin Guarantee may be the best thing for you. If you are new to cruising and unsure of what to expect you may want to take a few cruises before you try the Cabin Guarantee. You don’t want your cruise vacation to get off to a bad start when you get to your cabin and realize it’s not what you expected.
Either way I hope you enjoy your next (or first) cruise. Bon Voyage!
